Which position is NOT allowed to clear or pass a DUR?

In the context of a Drug Utilization Review (DUR), a pharmacy technician is typically involved in supportive roles such as medication preparation, inventory management, and other tasks that assist pharmacists. However, the responsibility for performing a DUR—an evaluation of a patient's medication therapy to ensure safety and efficacy—rests with licensed professionals who possess the necessary clinical judgment and expertise.

Pharmacists are specifically trained to assess medication interactions, contraindications, and overall appropriateness of therapy based on a patient’s health profile. Pharmacy managers are also licensed pharmacists and therefore hold the authority to conduct DURs. Pharmacy interns, while still in training, are generally supervised by licensed pharmacists and can contribute to the DUR process under their guidance.

Since pharmacy technicians are not licensed to make clinical assessments or determine the appropriateness of therapy, they are not permitted to clear or pass a DUR. This restriction emphasizes the importance of having qualified personnel handle critical clinical evaluations to ensure patient safety.
